Working for this established and international manufacturer as their Control Systems Engineer you will be responsible for engineering new and existing projects. This includes pressure control systems and other equipment/systems that complement the products in line with client/industry requirements.

The Control Systems Engineer role is focused on creation of products in line with customer requirements and budget. This requires large amount of communication with the Engineering team, Customers, Sales, Procurement and Manufacturing.

As the Control Systems Engineer , you will be required to provide updates to customers and host design reviews internally and externally, visiting sites where necessary. During commissioning / build phases you will be expected to support manufacturing to answer questions regarding assembly, operation and testing. You may also be required to perform on-site commissioning. Additionally, working with the Sales team you may have scope out prospective projects and comment on timings.

You will be expected to work in line with the business Quality Management System (QMS) with a focus on continuous improvement of the company and products.

As the Control Systems Engineer, you will be expected to have a comprehensive understanding of PLC & HMI programming, to be able to create programs for bespoke systems through modification of existing software and creation of new software. You will work independently, creating programs that satisfy the customers’ requirements.

Responsibilities as the Control Systems engineer:

  • Independent programming of Siemens PCL / HMI based systems.
  • Reading and understanding of P&IDs, specifications & control narratives.
  • Carry out regular design reviews with the team and customer.
  • Making modifications to HMI screens and operations in line with internal and external feedback.
  • Management of third parties designing electrical control panels.
  • Checking of third-party designs including but not limited to:

o Control Panel electrical design / physical layout.

o Electrical control component selection / specification.

o Electric / Hydraulic / Pneumatic actuation specification.

o Integration of third party, proprietary components.

  • Ensure designs conform to industry, customer and company standards.
  • Analyse designs using suitable tools.
  • Carry out value engineering to engineer cost out of the products.
  • Output of accurate technical documents (such as O&Ms, specifications etc) to suppliers and customers, both internal and external.
  • Manage non-conformances.

Key skills required by the Control Systems Engineer:

  • Ensure adherence to all Health & Safety procedures. Be proactive in the raising of potential H&S issues and the development of personal safety awareness.
  • Ability to code “from scratch” using existing standard blocks
  • Experience with Siemens PLC controlled automation in a process or production environment including:

o TIA Portal V15, V15.1 & V16.

o Communications networking (Ethernet, Profibus and Profinet)

  • Produce software specifications and design documentation.
  • Configure and develop software for a wide variety of applications.
  • Need for high level engineering skills to cover all systems (PLC, SCADA, and a sound working knowledge of VSD’s)
  • Perform PLC control level issue diagnosis, possess a highly‐developed fault finding and problem‐solving skills.
  • Capable of following, understanding and developing improvement strategies within PLC ladder code.
  • Design, modify and code on new and existing HMI displays.
  • Test and commission safely in a working environment
  • Support commissioning of new automation and plant.
  • Collaborate and communicate with engineers and production staff when completing project work to enhance production efficiency, effectiveness and operational understanding.
  • Advantageous to have a working knowledge of: ‐ Safety PLC & IO, Pneumatics and Hydraulics

Experience & Qualifications required by the Control Systems Engineer:

  • Proven working experience as an Electrical / Controls Engineer programming PLCs
  • Experience working with bespoke systems / machine design and manufacture.
  • Control of electro-mechanical systems, hydraulics and pneumatics or associated supply.
  • Industry experience; (custom machine design, high pressure / hydraulic systems).
