Tooling Design Engineer / Mechanical Machinery Designer is required for a permanent position working M-F days in the Knutsford area, with the opportunity of some hybrid working on completion of probationary / training period. Salary for this role is up to £40,000 pa (DoE & Quals) plus exc. benefits. Qualified to HNC level in Mech Eng. as a minimum, HND or degree, 2:2 and above in Mechanical Engineering (desirable). Knowledge of 3D CAD, design experience of tooling and moving machinery / special purpose moving machinery used in manufacturing sector (food, pharma or packaging sectors is desirable).
The client may also consider candidates as a Junior / Trainee Tooling Design Technician / Engineer, have recently completed a mechanical apprenticeship focusing on design, or a recently graduated Mechanical Engineer with some relevant tooling design experience in the manufacturing sector through a sandwich year / placement etc.

Primary Purpose:
Working alongside the Head of Design and Design Team Leader, you will be responsible for the design of all tooling & mechanical machinery in accordance with customer specifications and requirements following current legislative and directive guidelines within the industry.
The successful Tooling / Mechanical Design Engineer day to day duties will include:
- Ensure the accurate and timely production of Tooling and Mechanical Assemblies upon instruction from Head of Design and Design Team Leader.
- Ensure that all designs adhere to the relevant CE machinery directives.
- Produce fully detailed Tooling & Machine design drawings to BS8888-2011 to aid production, manufacturing and assembly.
- Adhere to the Company’s CI programme and contribute daily to the team SQCDP boards.
- Suggest improvements to working practices, identify potential issues and offer cost effective solutions.
- Ensure that fault finding activity is arranged to cause minimum disruption to the customer and that situations are resolved as quickly and efficiently as possible liaising with the customer as required
- Ensure that all documentation and information is maintained and stored on a day to day basis and in the appropriate manner.
- Adhere to Packaging Automations health and safety policies and procedures.
- Adhere to customer’s site factory rules and hygiene regulations following their Health and Safety Notices to Contractors where appropriate.
- Keep the Design Manager/ Team Leader informed of task accomplishment, issues and status.
- Escalate issues which cannot be resolved by the team to the Team Leader.
- Interact with both sales and projects to ensure the design criteria meets the agreed specification.
- Liaise with CNC programmer to ensure efficient manufacture of both mechanical and tooling components.
- Liaise with Systems Design Engineers to ensure that the tooling design is electrically and mechanically compatible
- Coordinate with internal and external customers and responding promptly to requests to attend customer sites for the purpose of diagnosing machine/tooling operational faults or design related problems.
- Work as a team to address all relevant issues in a timely manner and to the customer requirements.
- Assist customers and colleagues with problems that arise offering practical and appropriate solutions.
- Deal professionally, competently and courteously with customers, suppliers and colleagues in verbal and written communications.
- Communicate with shop floor to deliver tooling and machine build information.
- Report findings and progress to your Manager / Projects Manager / Customer Service Manager as appropriate.
- Coach, support, monitor and give appropriate feedback during training to trainees and apprentices.
- Pursue personal development of skills and knowledge necessary for the effective performance of the role.
The ideal Mechanical / Tooling Design Engineer will have the following experience / characteristics:
- HNC as a minimum, ideally Mechanical Engineering degree with a grade of 2.1 or higher (or equivalent)
- Application of engineering data. (Tolerances on drawings)
- Understanding of pneumatic components, and their function
- Use of 3D CAD system
- Understanding of electrical components, and their function
- Knowledge / experience of CNC machining
- Experience of designing moving / special purpose machinery in food, pharma or packaging manufacturing sectors.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and liaise with staff and customers.
- Full UK driving license & UK Passport
- Ability to stay away from home overnight occasionally
