High Voltage Electrical Commissioning Engineer

The role of HV Electrical Commissioning engineer is to be responsible for making sure that all of the equipment and facilities needed at a client’s site are installed correctly and safely, and that everything works as expected according the design and specifications provided.

Typical tasks include:

  • testing equipment on site.
  • making improvements to, and offering advice about, operational procedures.
  • creating and implementing test procedures.
  • investigating problems and diagnosing and repairing faults.
  • liaising with clients and installation/project engineers.
  • supervising engineering and technical staff.
  • gathering and analysing performance and safety data.
  • writing reports and documentation.
  • providing technical support.
  • ensuring safe working conditions
  • training maintenance and operative staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Testing and commissioning distribution systems up to 132kV incl. transformers, CB’s, protection schemes
  • Support wireman team, preparing multicore schedules and core sheets
  • Preparing commissioning RAMS, ITP, commissioning programme
  • Coordinate with SAP and Project Managers project programs and input changes if required
  • Arrange with SAP and Project Managers requirements for off load testing, on load testing and energisation
  • Witness the activities performed by manufacturer’s commissioning engineers performing specialist testing on behalf of the Contractor i.e. Brush, HSS, Schneider Electric.
  • SSE authorisations preferred
  • Compiling data from these tests and producing evidence to prove that equipment passes mandatory assessments and meets regulation requirements
  • Troubleshooting any existing problems or limitations of the existing equipment, machinery and systems that a client has
  • Repairing faults
  • Working with other engineers or site staff to carry out tests and repairs
  • Ensuring safe working conditions for everyone involved in the testing and assessment of site machinery and equipment
  • Providing training for system testing and evaluation where appropriate
  • Travelling to different client sites for specified periods of time to oversee commissioning projects
  • Participate in lessons learnt meetings following project completion.

Regular communication and collaboration with various departments within the company, such operations and design, to ensure the successful execution of project works

Building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and partners in the energy sector, and working closely with suppliers and contractors as required.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field or relevant knowledge and experience in a similar role
  • Extensive experience of Commissioning complex HV Systems in a Live Open Busbar environment.
  • Good knowledge of secondary and primary injection methods, CT’s and VT’s testing, functional checks, hard wire or fibre optic intertrips, DNP3 and 10pair hard wired communication, SCADA check to the Customer Control Room, on load checks and tests i.e. DEF, DOC.
  • Testing/programming of Micom series relays incl. psl and DNP3, Siemens Siprotec, Sepam, Microtapp’s and SuperTapp’s, P&B, GEC, Alstom/Areva incl. Optimho and K series, ABB, Reyrolle incl. Solkor R/Rf/N and Ohmega series, Toshiba, A-eberle REG-D
  • Very good knowledge of computer hardware and software, including the following:
    • Microsoft office package
    • Omicron: basic, advanced distance protection, differential, ramping, sequencer, OCC etc.
    • Omicron CT’s analyzer
    • Redysip Evolution
    • DIGSI
    • Micom S1/Studio/Agile
    • SFT
    • VT100 for SCADA RTU’s
  • Indirectly leading and influencing people/teams from other functions
  • Working to tight deadlines
  • Very good manual skills, wiring and fitting skills, electrical and mechanical faults finding
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Mathematical skills and the ability to apply them to solve problems.
  • Commercial awareness.
  • The ability to work well under pressure and deal with unexpected change.

Good IT and analytical skills.

The package will be:

Up to £90,000 per annum base salary

£4680 car allowance

Mileage claim

26 days annual leave

Pension – 4.5% Ee, 7% Er

Death in service – 4 x base salary

Probation – 6 months

Bonus – 2% per year, only eligible after probation, non-contractual and based on business performance
