GPW Recruitment were proud to play a major part in the Paul Wellens Testimonial game on Sunday 18th January. GPW are personal sponsors of Paul and have been for a number of years so it was great to be able to support him on his big day. As match sponsors for the day GPW entertained 30+ clients and selected man-of-the match for both the Saints 97 team v Legends game and the main match.
Tommy Martyn won man-of the match in the Legends game showing much of the flair he had back in this playing days. Selected by Roy Unsworth, a GPW Client and ironically a staunch Wigan fan, the trophy was presented by GPW Director Mark Parish at pitch side after the game. It was a treat to see many of the great players of yesteryear entertaining the crowds.
Fitting for the day and real tribute to his long service at the club, the man-of-the-match was non other than Paul Wellens himself – selected and presented personally by Graham Worsley, Managing Director at GPW.
As part of the proceedings GPW assisted with the selling of raffle tickets for a signed Saints shirt which was kindly donated to the Testimonial Fund by one of GPW’s key clients – S Hawley & Co. On the day the raffle raised £520 and was won by Geoff “OZ” Pye from Rainford. Geoff kindly donated it back to GPW to auction off which then raised another £100 with Garry Anders being the final winner of the auction.
Paul Wellens being the gentleman he is however has kindly donated all proceeds from the raffle and auction to a charity close to all our hearts – Willowbrook Hospice! He will be presenting a cheque for £620 to Willowbrook over the next few weeks.
All in all it was an excellent event which celebrated the career of one of the greatest rugby league players of the modern era. Celebrations continued through the evening with many of the players and fans attending the after match party at one of the local bars in St Helens.
GPW and all its staff wish Paul all the very best for the rest of his testimonial year and look forward to seeing him in action shortly with the start of the Super League season just around the corner
