Scouting in Speke Project Gathers Momentum

Young people in Speke have been getting involved in a range of exciting activities over the past few weeks as part of the launch of the Scouting in Speke Project. The project aims to bring scouting activities into the Speke area so that young people can get involved and experience the excitement famous figures such as Richard Branson, Paul McCartney and David Beckham once experienced when they were younger as part of the Scouting movement.

The long term goal is to establish a permanent scouting group in Speke and this will be ultimately determined by the level of interest shown. Russell Wright, Scout Development Officer (Speke) commented “The level of interest from a wide range of community groups and schools in the Speke area has been fantastic and we have been able to organise a number of taster sessions so the youngsters can really get a feel for how exciting it can be to be involved in scouting”.
Activities include climbing, archery, survival skills, team building games, go-karting plus many many more at Tawd Vale in Ormskirk and kayaking at Liverpool Marina. Groups that have been involved with the project include Stockton Wood, St Christophers and St Ambrose primary schools, the Speke Five Centre Youthpoint and St Ambrose Speke Youth Service Summer Club. Over 200 young people have participated in the activities so far.

The Scouting in Speke Project will be running lots more activities over the summer months and includes a Summer Club for 8 to 11 year olds starting on Saturday 14th July at Stockton Wood Primary School.

Merseyside County Scouts are currently looking for volunteers to help with the Scouting in Speke Project. “Scouting groups across the world are run by groups of volunteers without which scouting would not be possible” says Russell, “It is essential that we have the right number of volunteers to assist with the running of the group and organisation of the fantastic activities available to the young people in Speke. Volunteering gives you the chance to learn new skills, try new things, meet new people and make a positive difference to young peoples lives by helping to inspire them. We need your help and would love to hear from you if you are interested in registering as a volunteer”.
