Attending a job interview is a nerve-wracking yet exciting time. After gaining an interview with a successful application, the job interview is your chance to show who you really are to make sure you are chosen for the vacancy. It is your chance to sell yourself in person.

Here at GPW Recruitment, we have put together a list of five tips, which can help you to prepare for a job interview. We know what it takes to be successful in a job interview, what employers are looking for and how you can stand out from the crowd and from other candidates. Check out our list of handy tips below.

Arrive on Time

Nothing will put your interviewer off more than if you are late for your interview. In their eyes, if you cannot manage to turn up to your interview on time how can you be expected to turn up to work on time.

Set off early so if you arrive with a lot of time to spare you can spend those minutes going through final preparations for your interview. It also means if you have any trouble finding the location of the office or business premises that you will have time in hand to find it without being late.

Dress Accordingly

Irrespective of the dress code of the company you are interviewing for, it will always work in your favour to dress smartly for the interview. Even if you ‘overdress’ it will not harm your chances and could even help you to stand out from other candidates. If anything it will make you memorable.

Also, if you dress smartly for an interview it also gives the impression of a professional and mature attitude. You will be able to get a vibe for what will be considered inappropriate by the business and the position you are applying for.

Do Your Research and Preparation

It is important that prior to your interview you do research on not only the job you are applying for but also the company you are hoping to work for. Have in your head the ways you feel you can successfully fit into the role you wish to be chosen for and make sure to tell the interviewer about them when given the opportunity. Remember to mention any previous experiences you have that relate to the job you are applying for.

In relation to the company itself, you will be asked what you already know about them and why you wish to become employed by them. Look on their website and social media pages to learn more about the firm. Make note of anything that stands out to you and catches your eye. If you simply turn up on the day without any preparation you will not be able to successfully negate interview.

Ask Questions

The interview will normally end with the person interviewing you asking if you have any questions. This is your chance to make an impression by asking intelligent and inquisitive questions. Do not ask about pay or annual leave, those type of questions can be left for another time.

Ask questions relating to the role itself, potential career paths within the company and where the firm sees itself in the next few years.

Stay Confident and Honest

Although you might be nervous you should try your best to stay relaxed and to display confidence in your suitability for the role. Make sure if you have certain skills or traits that you feel make you ideal for the position that the interviewer is made aware. However, ensure you do not do it in a way that comes across as arrogant.

In terms of honesty, make sure that there is nothing on your CV that is untrue as that will lead to your interview unravelling. Always be honest throughout the entire application process. The interviewer and your prospective employers will value your honesty and integrity.
